LASIK surgery corrects the vision of the patients suffering from a very high level of astigmatism. But even after the surgery a little amount of astigmatism is left in the eye of the patient. This is corrected by the use of a contact lens. Hybrid or gas permeable (GP) contact lenses help improve the vision of people who do not get complete result from the LASIK or any other refractive surgery.

Gas permeable lenses are referred to the patients when no second surgery will help improve their eye sight. The rigid and smooth surface of the contact lens corrects the vision imperfections which does not receive any help from the eye glasses or soft lenses. Therefore, hybrid or gas permeable lenses are the first choice of eye care practitioners. They know that it is only these lenses that can help the patient get a clear and sharp vision.

You must be thinking why you don’t have a sharper vision even after surgery. The result completely depends upon the response of your cornea to the laser energy and the way the cornea heals after surgery. The LASIK surgery can at times cause irregular astigmatism. It may even lead to a blurry or distorted vision.

Some may face side effects after the LASIK surgery such as headaches, difficulty in driving during the night time and eye strain, where as some may have a comfortable vision.

The irregularities caused by the LASIK surgery in the form of your eye surface can make the vision blurry and distorted. These irregularities can be corrected through a follow up procedure through laser known as enhancement.

But if the doctors feel that the cornea of your eye is too thin then they will not recommend you with a second surgery. They will prescribe you with hybrid or GP contact lenses.

The rigidity of the GP contact lenses helps maintain the shape of the eye. The soft lenses do not allow keeping up with the shape of your cornea.

The space or the gap between the back area of the lens and the cornea is full of tears. It is the tear that covers the small irregularities on the surface of cornea. The smooth surface of gas permeable lens replaces the irregular surface of cornea, thus removing the visual distortions and blurry vision.

While comparing soft lenses with the GP lens, the soft ones are pliable, therefore, these lenses cannot provide the kind of result that gas permeable lenses provide to the patient.
